Mr. Al Alligood, age 71, of Davisboro, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family Monday, February 16, 2026. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, February 20th, at 11:00 a.m. at White Oak Church. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery with military honors. Reverend Danny Thomas and Reverend John Pirkel will officiate. Paul Jackson, Eddie Morgan, Andy Welch, Charlie Welch, William Horton, Ralph Chandler, T.J. Farthing and Paul Anderson will serve as pallbearers and the Davisboro Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. Al's family will greet friends Thursday, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., in May and Smith Funeral Home.
William Alton Alligood was born, reared and a lifetime resident of Washington County, son of the late Alton Junior Alligood and Nadine Elton Alligood. He graduated from Washington County High School in 1973. In his youth he played high school football and church league softball, where he acquired his nick name "Gator" known for his toughness. Al proudly served his country in both the Army and National Guard, where he was trained as an explosive expert. Following his service, He returned home and began and thirty-year career in maintenance beginning with American Industrial Clay Company and ending at Imerys. Al's second career was with the City of Davisboro, where he was the Director of Public Works for over 16 years. Al served his community in many ways, one as a licensed Emergency Medical Technician for the Washington County Ambulance Service and also as Fire Chief for the City of Davisboro, a position he held for 32 years. Al along with his wife Nellie owned and operated the Hitching Post restaurant in downtown Davisboro for many years. He had a passion for racing go-carts and mini stock cars. Al was an excellent carpenter and plumber and was truly considered a "jack of all trades". He never met a stranger and above all cherished his entire family and friend group. In addition to his parents, Al is predeceased by his wife Nellie Welch Alligood and siblings David Wayne Alligood and Mary Alligood.
Survivors include his children, Michele Anderson and A.J. Alligood, both of Davisboro and Ben Alligood and his wife Marcianne of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Noah Alligood and Allana Anderson; and siblings, Jean Blizzard and her husband Bill of Dublin and Jeff Alligood and his wife Kay of Sandersville.
