Mrs. Alma Marie Bishop Poppell, age 90, of 838 North Pecan Drive in Sandersville died Tuesday February 21 in Harlem Georgia.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday February 24 in the Sisters Baptist Church Cemetery in Sandersville with George Dickson officiating.
Mrs. Poppell was a native of Screven County, Georgia, the daughter of the late John Bishop and the late Mattie Stewart Bishop. She was the wife of the late Clyde J. Poppell and the late Bill Whealton. Mrs. Poppell was a former Drill Sergeant with the United States Army and a veteran of World War II. She was a retired teacher with the Jefferson County Training Center and a homemaker. Mrs. Poppell was a member of the Sisters Baptist Church.
Survivors are her children, Dean Paul Poppell and his wife Theresa of Ocean Springs, MS, Bruce Daniel Poppell and his wife Sheila of Rockford, AL, Johnnie Michael Whealton of Sandersville, Gary Whealton and his wife Christie of San Antonio, TX, and Wayne Whealton and his wife Becky of Hemlock, IN, three sisters, Reba B. Scott of Sandersville , Lucille Arata of Sunrise, FL and Joann Mullis and her husband James of Harlem, nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and an aunt, Carie Bishop of Harlem.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday.
The family suggest that donations be made to the Sisters Baptist Church, 1807 East McCarty Street , Sandersville, Georgia 31082.
