Alvin Willis Josey

Mr. Alvin Willis Josey, age 93 of Augusta, passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at his residence after an extended illness. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, September 9, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel of May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville. Reverend Wayne Usry and Reverend Kevin Jones will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Mr. Josey was born in Sandersville, the son of the late Willis Evans Josey and the late Zelma Price Josey. He was a star basketball player for Riddleville School and Washington County High School. Mr. Josey served his country in the Korean Conflict as a member of the United States Army. He was employed in the maintenance department at Dupont Savannah River Plant until his retirement, after which he worked with his wife, son and daughter-in-law at Plantation Greenhouses. Mr. Josey was an avid Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets fan. His favorite hobbies were working in the yard and spending time with his family. Mr. Josey served for many years as a Deacon at Silvercrest Baptist Church. Above all else, his main goal in life was to take care of his loving wife, Betty Joyce. In addition to his parents, Mr. Josey is proceeded in death by his siblings, Wilmer Josey, Ernest Lee Josey, Martha Lou Woodard, and Forrest Josey.

Mr. Josey is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Betty Joyce Smith Josey; children, Debra Josey of Sandersville, Alvin Wayne Josey and his wife Beth of Hepzibah, and David E. Josey and his wife Myra of Augusta; granddaughter, Lauren J. Galavotti and her husband Adam of Augusta; great grandchildren, Dale and Josey Galavotti; and many nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made in Mr. Josey’s memory to the Gideons International, Sandersville Camp, P O Box 891, Sandersville GA 31082 or to the New Family Cemetery, c/o Faye Blount, 168 Red Hill Drive, Harrison, GA 31035.
