Andrew J. Shelton of Stockbridge passed away June 11 after a brief illness. A longtime resident of Henry County, Andy served for over a decade as a commissioner for the Henry County Board of Tax Assessors for the 5th District. An alumnus of the University of Georgia, Andy was a life-long Bulldog fan who loved watching sports telecasts. He was an avid history and genealogy buff. Along with his wife, Sheila, he authored a book documenting the history of churches throughout Georgia. Andy had a long and successful career beginning as a scientist with the US Space Program where he helped to develop the lunar landing module that landed the first man on the moon. Subsequently, he worked as a civilian engineer with the US Army Forces Command and then as a consultant for the Pentagon after retirement. A member of Salem Baptist Church, he was actively involved in Bible Study and other church activities. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.
Mr. Shelton was born in Statesboro, GA to the late Andrew J. and Eunice Sconyers Shelton, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his wife Sheila Knight Shelton. He is survived by his daughters and their spouses, Julie and John Mastroianni, Houston, TX, and Charlotte and David German, Walnut Creek, CA; grandson, Thomas Mastroianni; nieces, Dona Archer Sandersville, GA and Diana and her spouse Gil Gonzalez, Warner Robins, GA; and Mary Trammell, Linda and Frank Dodds of Lake Zurich, IL and numerous extended family.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Salem Baptist Church, McDonough with Rev. Rick C. Statham officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 15, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
