Mrs. Barbara Mappin Buchanan, age 89 of Sandersville, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Addington Place in Dublin, following an extended illness. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Riddleville Cemetery. Reverend Lee Lacey will officiate, and Mrs. Buchanan’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Buchanan was born in Miami, Florida, the daughter of the late Bernard Mappin and the late Ruth Swetland Mappin. She had a Bachelor of Science in Education but chose to stay home and care for her family as a homemaker. Mrs. Buchanan loved her church and community and was a Sunday school teacher for many years, worked in the church library and was a member of the “Wendy’s Coffee Club.” IN addition to all of these things, Mrs. Buchanan enjoyed reading as well as sewing and crocheting. She was a member of Sandersville First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Lawrence Buchanan.
Mrs. Buchanan is survived by her daughters, Cella Cox (Stephen) of Dublin, and Susan Buchanan of Sandersville; son, Andy Buchanan (Cindy) of Hartwell; Grandchildren, Stephanie Gollogly, Taga Haynie (Lamar), John Mark Cox (Jaycie), Paul Cox (Hadiya), Luke Cox, Kori Barrintine (Josh), Adam Buchanan (Katie); Emily D’ambra (Danny), John Buchanan (Amanda), and Lars Buchanan; great grandchildren, Astrud Haynie, and Macy Marx (Jason); and brothers, Jim Mappin (Charlotte) of Newnan, and Steven Mappin (Marie) of Plant City, FL.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Addington Place and Remarkable Hospice for their excellent care of both Mrs. and Mr. Buchanan.
