Betty Morris Golden, 82, and Jamie Golden, 83, entered into rest September 3 rd , 2021.
Funeral services are Private.
The family will receive friends at Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors, Thursday, September 9, 2021, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM.
Betty was born in Washington County, Georgia, to Pierce Edward and Dovie Moye Morris. She graduated Sandersville High School in 1957 and Medical College of Georgia with a degree in Nursing in 1961. In 1969, she completed a Masters degree of Nursing Administration at the University of Georgia.
Jamie was born in Washington County, Georgia, to Milo Farmer and Mazy Lorene Golden. He graduated Sandersville High School in 1956 and attended Southern Tech University where he graduated with an engineering degree in 1960.
In 1960, Betty and Jamie, elementary school sweethearts, were married at Davisboro Methodist Church.
During her career as a registered nurse, Betty, was charge nurse and assistant director of Gracewood State School and Hospital. At the Medical College of Georgia, she was a staff nurse, head nurse, and ultimately promoted to Director of Nursing in 1971. She was appointed by Governor Joe Frank Harris to be the President of the Georgia Board of Nursing and served in that post for many years. In 1989, she joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, Medical Unit (Primus) P0703A, where she served until 1992 as a Lieutenant. In 1991, she retired from the Medical College of Georgia, having served as an Associate Hospital Director for Patient Care and Director of Nursing for 20 years.
In her retirement, Betty spent time volunteering for the food pantry as an active member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She was dearly loved by her church family and friends. She was a member of the Augusta Garden Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved spending time with her friends, cousins, children, and grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents.
Jamie worked for the Georgia Department of Transportation from 1960 to 1992, as a transportation engineer in the Augusta District. Some of his career highlights include the construction of the I-20 bridge over the Savannah River and the completion of I-20 from Augusta to Madison. He was also involved in the construction of the John C. Calhoun Expressway and River Watch Parkway, among many other projects around and near Augusta, Georgia.
Jamie was a very faithful Deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church and was dearly loved by his church family and friends. He enjoyed volunteering at the food pantry at Hillcrest Baptist Church, golfing, fishing, and working in his garden in Riddleville, Georgia. He loved spending time with his brother and sisters, nieces and nephews, and his children and grandchildren.
Jamie was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jean Perdue.
Betty and Jamie would have celebrated their 61 st wedding anniversary on September 4, 2021.
Betty and Jamie are survived by their children, Pete Golden (Marci), Julie Nelson (Bill); their grandchildren, Grant Michael Golden (Chelsea), Jesse Sheridan Nelson, Betty Carol Nelson, Lila Kate Golden, and Lyndi Kay Golden; Jamie’s brother, Bill Golden (Barbara); and Jamie’s sisters, Jenny Boatright (Loring – deceased), Harriet Amerson (Howard – deceased), and Jane Arata (Fank - deceased).
