Betty Ruth Walker Garner won her battle with colon cancer on October 26, 2020. She was born on September 25, 1935 to the late Eugene and Ila Amerson Walker of Warthen, Georgia. She attended Warthen Elementary School, graduated from Sandersville High School and attended Mercer University. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Steve S. Garner, her son, Steve E. Garner, and son-in-law, Don Haney.
She is survived by her daughters, Debra Garner Haney of Aiken, SC, and Melissa Ann Garner (Rick Dalton) of Covington, GA; her grandsons, Cameron Allen Hughes (fiancée, Jessi Wood and daughter Ansleah) of Warthen, Deric Chandler Garner (fiancée, Ashley Cabe) of Sandersville, and Private First Class Thomas Ian Garner of Tacoma, Washington; She is also survived by cousins, including L.H. and Joyce Carter of Warthen; nieces and nephews, including Thena Ann Garner of Warrenton, GA and Reggie Garner of Norwood, GA.
A member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Mrs. Garner was active in the Women’s Mission organization and played the organ for the church. She and her husband lived in Macon, Decatur, Conyers, and returned to the Warthen community in the early 1990’s. For many years they attended local craft shows, showing off Steve’s woodworking skills and Betty’s needlework and other crafts.
There will be a graveside service celebrating her life Friday, October 30, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Warthen. Reverend Tim Powell of Cochran will officiate. Pallbearers will be Chris Brown, Jared Bass, Tommy May, Pat Brown, Jason Carter, Houston Channell, Chris Carter, and D.J. McDonald
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Mission Endeavors at Bethlehem Baptist Church, P.O. Box 85, Warthen, GA 31094.
