Carmen Roberts Harden

January 21, 1941 — February 17, 2017

Mrs. Carmen Roberts Harden, of Beaufort South Carolina, formerly of Sandersville died Friday, February 17, 2017 following a six year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.   In family tradition her ashes will be mixed with those of her spouse and interred at a future date in the National Military Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina. A family service has been held.

Carmen was born Carmen Jean Roberts to Clarence and Jean Roberts in Iowa City, Iowa on 21 January 1941. She graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa with a degree in Commercial Art. Carmen then went to Minneapolis, Minnesota following in the footsteps of Mary Tyler Moore.

Her Georgia years were joyful. Her membership in the Asbury Sunday School Class at the Sandersville United Methodist Church and her acceptance into “The Bridge Club” were high points in her Sandersville life.

She married Lewis Brown Harden on 20 July 1964. She mothered two sons, John and Christian. She is survived by her husband Lewis Harden, her two sons, a daughter-in-law, Erica Godbee Harden, a treasured grand-daughter Mary Katherine Harden, and a sister, Linda Mead of Des Moines Iowa.

Condolences can be addressed to Lewis Harden, 404 Island Circle East, St. Helena, South Carolina 29920, or to hardenc53@gmail.com . The family requests no flowers. Carmen asked that any remembrances be directed to the donor’s favorite charity. Carmen and I thank you all for your prayers and the knowledge you will look after our children and grand-daughter.

Dear God:

We thank you for Carmen Jean Harden. Long before we knew each other Carmen and I were schooled that your Son was given to us.

As we grew older we each accepted Jesus Christ, and his teachings, as our path to Salvation. We thank you that we have suffered few needs, or pain, or unusual losses in our lives.

Salvation to us was always about your forgiveness of our sins. That Unconditional Grace has seemed the essential beauty and power of Christianity.  For both of us Jesus has always remained our Personal Savior—we have never found need to look elsewhere.

Carmen seeks forgiveness—I think you will smile—as her sins appear to have been of a very gentle variety.

Her spirit has been leaving her body slowly in the past days of our suffering. We are thankful for the relief you have sent us.

God, please bless Carmen Roberts Harden.      //    Amen.
