Doris Peavy Gibson, age 81, died Friday, May 22, at the Washington County Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at the Tennille Baptist Church at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, May 26, 2009 with interment following at Washington County Memorial Gardens. Services will be conducted by Rev. Mark Jones, Mike Adams and Danny Thomas.

The family will greet friends at May and Smith Funeral Home on the Riddleville Road in Sandersville, Ga. on Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The family can be contacted at the Gibson home in Tennille, Ga.

Mrs. Gibson had lived in Tennille, Georgia her entire life. She helped her husband establish and operate Gibson’s Television and Radio Service. At age 71, she joined the Volunteer Group at the local hospital and continued her service until her illness kept her from working. In 2009, she received her pin for donating over 8,000 hours to the hospital. Her main service was with the staff in the Physical Therapy Department where she was known for her beautiful smile and dedication for helping the patients. She also assisted with the Blood Drives and other activities connected with the hospital.

She was a member of the Tennille Baptist Church where she taught in the children’s Sunday School program for over 16 years and has been a member of the Adult Sunday School Class for many years.

Tending to the needs of her husband who had Alzheimer’s for 14 years and tending to the needs of a grandson with leukemia demonstrated her love of and dedication to family. Her love and compassion for others was evident as she served others. Her strong faith in God allowed her to deal with the loss of family members and to deal with her own health issues with hope and a strong sense of peace.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Allen Gibson; parents Arthur and Orie Peavy; grandsons Christopher Caneega, Jeff Caneega and Brent Caneega; a son-in-law Clark Gravelle; brother Arthur Peavy, Jr.

Survivors include children Jeanette (Lamar) Caneega of Wrightsville, Jane Gravelle of Annandale, Va., and Joe Gibson of Wrightsville; grandchildren Lauren (Bryant)Poss, Jennifer Gravelle and Josh Hurst; great grandchildren Michael Caneega, Kodi Hurst, Jack Poss, Gabe Poss, Taylor Poss and Skyla Poss; sisters Etta Mae Trawick of Zebulon, GA and Sally (Hugh) Wynn of The Rock, GA; brothers Jack Peavy and Eddie (Gail) Peavy of Macon, GA, Bobby (Nita) Peavy of Milledgeville, GA and Jimmy (Dianne) Peavy of Gray, GA; sister-in-law Lala Peavy of Milledgeville, GA; many nieces and nephews.

Due to her great love of flowers, floral arrangements honoring “Miss Doris” will be lovingly appreciated. The family also suggests donations to the Physical Therapy Department or the Volunteers of the Washington County Regional Medical Center, P. O. Honorary Escorts will be the Volunteers and members of the Physical Therapy Department of the Washington County Regional Medical Center.
