Dorothy Jean Cummings Smith

Mrs. Dorothy Jean Cummings Smith, age 83, of Warthen died on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at her residence following an extended illness. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, March 12 at Warthen Methodist Church Cemetery.  Reverend Gary Mimbs will officiate.

Mrs. Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the daughter of the late Zack Brown Cummings and the late Mattie Lou Kelley Cummings.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Leonard Tanner, Sr. and Harry Carlton Smith, her children, Lynne Tanner Carothers, John Leonard Tanner, Jr. and James Patrick Tanner.  She also proceeded in death by her sister, Frances Cummings Simons and her brothers, William Durwood Cummings and James Franklin Cummings.  Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Georgia College with a degree in Nursing.  She was a registered nurse with Central State Hospital and was a former director of nursing for M. C. Smith Nursing Home. Mrs. Smith was a member of Warthen Methodist Church.

Survivors include her stepson, Jeff Smith and his wife Sharon of Sandersville; brother, Carl S. Cummings and his wife Jean of Warthen; sister, Linda Cummings Parker and her husband Bobby of Tennille; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the service in the Warthen Methodist Church.
