Dorothy Elkins Veal

Mrs. Dorothy Elkins Veal, age 89, of Warthen Street, Sandersville, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Washington County Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00am at the First Christian Church of Sandersville with burial in Brownwood Cemetery. Rev. Dale Andrews and Rev. Wyman Hodges will officiate. Pallbearers will be Otis Wiggins, Howard Veal, Louis Tucker, Elkins Tucker, David Strickland, and Aubrey Wiggins.

Mrs. Veal was born in Washington County the daughter of the late Green J. Elkins and the late Imogene Harrison Elkins. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church where she was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and former volunteer in the Church Mission Store. Mrs. Veal attended both Georgia State College for Women and Georgia Southern College. She was a loyal patron of the Rosa M. Tarbutton Library and a member of the 20th Century Club. Mrs. Veal was a dedicated visitor to community shut-ins and she was an avid gardener. Her husband Felix W. Veal Sr. and her sister Louise Elkins Pettigrew predecease her.

Survivors are her children, Felix W. Veal Jr. (Frances) of Sandersville, Carolyn V. Cummings also of Sandersville, Jean V. Cummings (Carl) of Warthen, and Anne V. Weathers (Dudley) of Milledgeville, grandchildren, Rachel Veal of California, Caroline Veal of Savannah, Allison C. Smith (Michael) of Sandersville, Leigh Cummings of Athens, Stephen Cummings (Lynne) of Marshallville, Cameron C. Al-Khazraji (David) of Atlanta, Kay Weathers of McDonough, and Bill Weathers of Milledgeville, and great grandchildren, Carleigh Smith, Zach Smith, Caleb Smith, Lainey Cummings, Aubrey Al-Khazraji and Gavin Al-Khazraji.

The family will be at the Veal residence 219 N. Harris St. Sandersville and will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 7pm at the May and Smith Funeral Home.
