Douglas Lamar Chambers, Sr

January 12, 1934 — November 11, 2025

Milledgeville, GA

Douglas Lamar Chambers, Sr., age 91, passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2025. He was born at home in Deepstep on January 12, 1934, to James Fred Chambers, Sr. and Mary Wiggins Chambers.

Mr. Chambers, affectionately known as Papa, was a native of Washington County, born and raised in Deepstep. He was a 1952 graduate of Sandersville High School. He met his beloved bride of 64 years, Jean, while both were working at Royal Manufacturing in Sandersville in 1955. Raised in a farming family, he returned to farming to manage Pine Grove Poultry Farm in Toomsboro. In March of 1964, he and his family moved to Black Lake Plantation in Wilkinson County, where he farmed for decades, while also raising his family. In 1978, while still farming Black Lake, he went to work in Sandersville for Murphy and Palmer Seeds where he stayed until his official retirement. After retirement, he could also be found “helping” at C&B Processing when he wanted a little something to do. He was a respected and admired farmer who supported the farming industry throughout his career. He was also a two-time Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma survivor.

Douglas was a loving father and Papa, and a devoted husband. He walked with the Lord daily while praying each morning, noon, and night by name for his beloved wife, his five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was deeply loved by his family, and he deeply loved each one. He will forever be the cornerstone of the Douglas and Jean Chambers’ family, as he stood firmly on the cornerstone of Christ, leading a quiet, humble and faithful example of God’s love. Much like the acres he farmed, and his famous home-grown tomatoes, he planted the seed of lasting love in each of his family members leaving a legacy that will grow for generations to come.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Imogene Keyton Chambers; brothers James Chambers, Frank Chambers, Robert “Bobby” Chambers, Fred Chambers, Jr., and sister Mary Floyd Cooke. He was a member of First Christian Church in Toomsboro.

Survivors include his children Robin Chambers Jackson (Terry) of Sandersville; Douglas L. Chambers, Jr; Chris Chambers (Gina); Jeff Chambers (Mitzi); and Bruce Chambers (Clara) all of Milledgeville; a brother Ronny Chambers (Lina); grandchildren Clint Chambers (Lindsey), Jennifer Palmer (Drew) , Nikki Brewer (Stacey), Kim David (Parrish), Kelly Sanford (Rob), Jessica Roberts (Justin), Jared Jackson (Breckyn), Cameron Chambers, Haylee Hurley (Keagan), Kelsey Chambers, Ashley Poole (Conner), Hannah Chambers, Madison Chambers, and Sydney Chambers, 16 great grandchildren, and many loved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or The Sandersville School Building Authority, PO Box 5923, Sandersville, GA 31082.
