Edna Huckaby Lewis

Mrs. Edna Earl Huckaby Lewis, 85, of Sandersville passed away on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at her residence surrounded by family, following an extended illness. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 4:00P.M. in the May and Smith Funeral Home with burial at Brownwood Cemetery. Chapel. Reverend Larry Glover will officiate.

Mrs. Lewis was born in Brooks, Fayette County, GA to the late Eva Lillian Turner Huckaby and the late James Clarke Huckaby. She grew up in Eatonton, Putnam County, GA where she played forward position for the Putnam County Blue Devils Girls’ Basketball Team throughout her high school years. Edna was a retired Insurance Agent with Wayne Lewis Insurance Agency, a member of Washington County Historical Society, and Sandersville United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Georgia Jaycettes Sandersville Chapter, and served as Chapter President during 1964. In more recent years, she volunteered weekly at the Washington County Historical Society Genealogy Research Center & Old Jail Museum. In her years there, she contributed largely to the Cemetery Records of Washington County, documenting countless cemeteries in Washington County, and loving every minute of it. She also enjoyed arrowhead hunting on a back road in her spare time.

Mrs. Lewis is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Edison “Blackie” Lewis Jr.; mother, Eva Lillian Turner Huckaby; father, James Clarke Huckaby; and sister, Nell Huckaby Campbell. She is survived by her three daughters, Karen Leigh Lewis (Dr. Tommy A.) Joiner of Flagler Beach, FL., Rita Elaine Lewis (Johnny C.) Chambers of Sandersville, Sherry Ann Lewis Watkins of Macon; grandchildren, John Ryan Chambers of Madison, Dallas Nicole Joiner of Miami, FL., John Derek Watkins of Savannah, Johnna Elaine Chambers (Brian Martin) of Sandersville, and Christa L. Chambers Davidek (Richard)of Franklin, NC; great-grandson, Mason Hunter Watkins of Colorado; a niece, Lisa Roberts of Eatonton; a nephew, Brad (Kelli) Roberts of Milledgeville; and two loving caregivers, Catherine Harris of Warthen, and Shirley Heggs of Sandersville.

The family will greet friends on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 3:00P.M. until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
