Elizabeth Wiggins Knight

June 6, 1934 — July 22, 2022

Mrs. Elizabeth Wiggins Knight went to be with the Lord on July 22, 2022 after an extended illness.  Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7 in the Chapel of May and Smith Funeral Home, with burial to follow at the Washington County Memorial Gardens.  The family will greet friends at May and Smith on the day of the funeral from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service.  Elizabeth’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers and her nephew, Reverend Eddie Wiggins, will officiate.

Elizabeth was a native of Washington County, born on June 6, 1934 to the late Speigel Edward Wiggins and the late Olive Veal Wiggins.  Elizabeth was a proud graduate of Tennille High School where she was a tenacious basketball star. She was a member of the Antioch Christian Church in Oconee for many years, as well as Liberty Chapel Church in Eatonton when she lived at Lake Sinclair.  Elizabeth’s wonderful and devoted husband, James R. Knight, predeceased her in 2014.

Elizabeth excelled at diverse pursuits, ranging from playing the piano by ear beginning at age 5 and singing gospel hymns to volunteering as a firefighter in the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department.  Elizabeth loved entertaining her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her Mema.  She taught them to fish, play games in the water and have fun at her home on Lake Sinclair, where she cooked wonderful meals for the entire family. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors are her three daughters, Debi Toulson Wilson and her husband Stan of Atlanta, Gail Toulson Lawler and her husband Terry of Greensboro and Jamie Knight Speice and her husband Rob of Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren, Matthew Wilson (Abby), Christopher Wilson (Merelise), Brian Lawler, Anna Kathryn Lawler, Nolan Speice (Kara), Kate Speice Little (Olen) and Dr. Christin Lawler Deal (Brian); and eight great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her three siblings, Marjorie Wiggins Perdue of Griffin, Georgia, and Edward Wiggins (Elaine) and Aubrey Wiggins (Andrea) of Washington County and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A special thanks to Elizabeth’s perfect caregivers at The Harbor at Harmony Crossing in Eatonton and the dedicated staff at Peaceful Purpose Hospice.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations to the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/ , Peaceful Purpose Hospice https://www.peacefulpurposehospice.com/foundation or The Harbor at Harmony Crossing.
