Mary Elizabeth Smith Page was born in Harrison, Georgia on April 5, 1932, to Joseph Clyde Smith and Eleen Smith. There Elizabeth grew up on her parents’ farm and went to school in Harrison, where she graduated after 11th grade. While growing up, going to school, and working on the farm she met the love of her life, Johnnie Dean Page, who grew up nearby. They dated for a short while and married on June 28, 1949, honeymooning in Cherokee, North Carolina. They moved to Hapeville, Georgia, where Johnnie worked for the U.S. Post Office. They bought a house in Decatur, Georgia, where they lived for 66 years raising three daughters and a son, Wanda, Janice, Reunett and Darrell. Elizabeth was a loving, energetic and wonderful mother and wife who took care of the kids and ran the home while Johnnie was working the mail on trains, as a U.S. Postal Railway clerk. She sewed the girls matching cheerleader outfits to cheer on her beloved Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. She never missed a sports game, whether cheering for her daughters or her son. As the kids grew older, she worked for a few years in the elementary school cafeteria, and then for many years at Borg’s Florist. Everyone that knew her loved her for her kind, gentle temperament. After the kids were grown she continued to both vegetable and flower garden. Her lilies and hydrangeas were sights to behold! She enjoyed growing these beautiful flowers and being able to get many to root from cuttings she would find in the wild. Dean and Elizabeth traveled more, visiting kids, grandkids and family across the country for many years and staying in touch with all her brothers, sisters and cousins. Each year she would host Christmas for her kids’ families baking her famous M&M cookies and her Franklin Nut cakes.
After Johnnie’s death in 2020 Elizabeth moved back to Harrison, to the home she had grown up in. She continued to garden, cook, visit with her family and friends, and keep in touch with everyone. She was a bundle of energy her whole life, always up and moving, crocheting blankets for loved ones, working on something in or around the house, never much for sitting around.
In addition to her parents. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Johnnie, her brother J.C. Smith, her sister Linda Query, and her daughter Wanda Page Torrance. She is survived by her children Janice (Donnie), Reunett (Mark), and Darrell (Janet); grandchildren, John, Christine, Joe, Eric, Jeremy, Kelly, Kristie, Katy, numerous great grandchildren and siblings Bennie Smith and Faye Blount.
The family wants to thank special caregivers, Terri McCoy, Sheri Haynes and Susan Dickerson for their love and compassionate care, along with Pruitt Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Family Cemetery, c/o Faye Blount, 168 Redhill Drive, Harrison GA 31035 or Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, 2055 Pleasant Plains Road, Harrison GA 31035.
