Elizabeth “Bets” T. Street, age 61, of 236 North Gilmer Park, Johnson City, passed away with her family by her side on Friday, January 11, 2013 following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Bets Street was a native of Johnson City, born January 13, 1951, she was a daughter of the late J.B. Thomas, Jr. and the late Elizabeth “Liz” Garrett Thomas. She was a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Barnes Thomas, Sr, and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Claude Garrett, and father-in-law, Kale Street.
Mrs. Street graduated from Science Hill High School in 1969 and the University of Tennessee 1973 with a degree in Deaf Education. She taught at the Tennessee School of the Deaf in Knoxville from 1973 to 1976, she worked as an Educator of the Deaf for the Johnson City School System, Carter County School System, and the Washington County School System.
Mrs. Street was a member of the Central Baptist Church, Johnson City, TN. She was a member of the Koinonia Sunday School Class. She participated in a mission trip to Prince Edward Island, and was involved in other various mission services with her church. She was a member of the Junior League and the Tennessee Education Association. She volunteered for the National Kidney Foundation of East Tennessee, Mountain Organ Donor Services, and Hospice. She was a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House through Central Baptist Church. She was an avid fisher person, and loved her beautiful party colored Cocker Spaniels.
Survivors include her husband, Anthony “Tony” Street, one daughter and son-in-law, Catherine Virginia “Jenna” Street Quigley and husband Brendan of Knoxville, TN, and two brothers, John “Tommy” B. Thomas, III, Christopher “Bud” Garrett Thomas and wife Kathy S., Johnson City; her mother-in-law, Jessie Orr Street, Johnson City; two sisters, Catherine “Cathy” T. Mills and husband David H. Mills, Elizabethton, TN, Brownie Thomas Barksdale and her husband Tut Barksdale, Tennille, GA, and brother-in-law James A. Street, Nashville. She had several nephews, nieces, great nieces and great nephews.
The funeral service for Mrs. Street will be conducted at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, January 13, 2012 at Central Baptist Church with Dr. Ronald F. Murray officiating.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 14 from Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jerry Dempsey, John Connor, Gordon Ledford, Bob Evans, Harry Harman, Dr. Stanley Vermillion, Dr. William “Bill” Kennedy, and Dan Jackson. Honorary pallbearers are Becky Richardson, Betsy Burleson, Sally Corbin, Cookie McKinney, Harrett Hager, Sharon Glassmeyer, Ruthie Drummond, Janice Moore, North Side School Birthday Club, Wellness Center Friends, Panera Bread Friends, Tennessee School of the Deaf, Special friends Sue Arnett, Sharon Chartier, BLS Architect’s Employees, Kroger Friends, Wal-mart Greeters, and North Side Friends.
Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet Monday at Appalachian Funeral Home at 9:30 A.M. to travel in procession to the cemetery.
