Mrs. Emma Ruth Cawley Maffett, age 79, of 624 Woodland Drive in Sandersville died Saturday morning, March 16, 2013, in the Washington County Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 18th, in the First Baptist Church of Sandersville with burial in the Washington County Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Lee Lacey will officiate.
Mrs. Maffett was a native of Waynesboro, Georgia but grew up in Sparta. She was the daughter of the late Forrest Phillip Cawley and the late Inez Odom Cawley. She was a 1950 graduate of Sparta High School. She received a Bachelor of Home Economics degree and a Bachelor of Education degree from Georgia State College for Women. Mrs. Maffett taught school for over 38 years in Waynesboro, Lake Park, Kite, the Washington County Public Schools and Brentwood School. She was the 10th Congressional District Star Teacher of the Year in 1984. Mrs. Maffett was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union.
Survivors are: her husband, C. W. “Jack” Maffett of Sandersville; two daughters, Allyson Maffett of Sandersville and Stephanie Maffett Salzinger and her husband Sandy of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Meredith Salzinger and Phillip Salzinger; a sister, Mardelle Carter and her husband Felton of Nichols; a brother, Phil Cawley and his wife Mary Ann of Macon; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 4:00 until 6:00 P. M. on Sunday.
