Mr. Emory Bell Garner, Jr., age 90, of 8030 Highway 88 East in Sandersville died Wednesday August 6 in the Extended Care Facility following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday August 10 in the First Baptist Church of Sandersville with burial in the Brownwood Cemetery with military honors. The Rev. Lee Lacey, Rev. Marlon Lastinger and Sam Waldron will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be the member of the Sandersville Lions Club and the Adult 5 Sunday school Group.
Mr. Garner was a native of Washington County, the son of the late Emory Bell Garner, Sr. and the late Maude Irene Swint Garner. He was retired from the United States Navy with 22 years of service. Mr. Garner was a former executive secretary for the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. In 1966 he joined American Industrial Clay Corporation as the personnel and safety director. After his retirement he was a consultant for C. T. Harris Incorporated and the Citizens Bank of Washington County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville where he served as a Deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Adult 5 Sunday School Class. Mr. Garner was a past president and life member of the Sandersville Lions Club and he was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was a member of the Washington County American Legion Post 94 and a member of the World War II Memorial Committee. Mr. Garner was a avid horseman and a riding instructor.
Survivors are his wife, Betty Jean Thomas Garner of Sandersville, his children, Sally Garner of Sandersville, Susan Garner (Bobby) Dallas of Troutville, Virginia and Thomas Emory (Tammy) Garner of Appling, Ga., and six grandchildren, Erin Dallas, Caitlin Dallas, Jesse Watts, Seth Watts, Chelsea Brannon and Allison Garner.
The family suggests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Sandersville Ghana Mission, 316 Mathis Circle, Sandersville, Ga. 31082 or Nightingale Hospice, 775 Waco Drive, Sandersville, Ga. 31082.
