Mr. Eugene Anthony “Gene” Crawford, age 80, of Atlanta, formerly of Statesboro, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2014.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday June 11 in the May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sandersville with burial in the Zeta Cemetery in Tennille. The Rev. Darell Young and Rev. Mark Jones will officiate. Pallbearers will be Mike Warren, Chris Warren, Warren Brantley, Wallace Brantley, Tom Goodwin, Marty Crawford, Wendell Tompkins, Jr. Greg Avra, Jeff Veal.
Gene was a native of Burke County, Georgia, the son of the late Luther Martin Crawford and the late Alice Wilkinson Crawford. He was preceded in death by his sister and brother in law, John and Jeanette Crawford McNorill, sister and brother in law Ernest and Zilla Crawford DeShields, brother and sister in law, L. M. and Frankie Crawford and his brother Richard Crawford. Gene spent most of his life in Statesboro. He received his undergraduate degree from the Georgia Teachers College, and his masters degree from Georgia Southern College. He was a former principal of Stilson Elementary School and Sallie Zetterower Elementary School. Gene was a former aide to U S Congressman Ronald “Bo” Ginn and U S Congressman J. Roy Roland. He retired from Georgia Southern University as Director of Alumni and Community Development. He was inducted into the Georgia Southern University Athletic Hall of Fame. Gene was a member of the Tennille Baptist Church.
Survivors are the love of his life, his wife of sixty years, Kathryn Warren Crawford, his son, Keith Crawford and his partner Ken Proctor, sister in law, Wynelle Warren Brantley of Tennille, brother in law, Robbie Warren and his wife Hazel of Waynesville, NC, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank his caregivers, Aphrodite Henderson and Kadan Home Health Care aid, Gabby.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to the Tennille Baptist Church, the Gene Crawford GSU Football Scholarship Fund or the “Mr. Crawford” Pro Am Golf Tournament at Georgia Southern University.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday.
