Geneva Lindsey Johnson, 79, passed away on Monday, May 03, 2010. Born in Harrison, Georgia, in Washington County, on February 24, 1931, Geneva was the daughter of the late Asa William and Ila Shurling Lindsey of Sandersville, Georgia. She was one of eight children: Benton Lindsey, Walter Lindsey (deceased) (Margaret), Rufus Lindsey (Margaret) and Robbie Lindsey (Charlotte), Beulah Bush (deceased), and Anna Reynolds – all of Sandersville, Georgia and Adele Fulmer (Bill) of Wagener, South Carolina. Geneva was married to the late Hal Everett Johnson on September 13, 1947, in Johnson County, Georgia, and they had three daughters: Peggy Hindsman (Len) of Macon; Mary Ann Johnson (deceased); and Judy Roberson (Ken) of Old Hickory, Tennessee.
She is also survived by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Freeney McGehee (Chase) and a great grandson, Gabriel McGehee – all of Savannah, Georgia; four step grandchildren: Walker Hindsman and Layton Hindsman of Macon, Georgia; Kenny Roberson and Joey Roberson of Springfield, Tennessee; and three step great grandchildren – Claire Hindsman of Madison, Mississippi; Annabelle Roberson and Alexander Roberson of Springfield, Tennessee; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and a host of loving friends and caregivers.
She lived in various Georgia towns as well as South Carolina and Miami, Florida before settling in Macon in 1960. In addition to being a mother and homemaker, she ran a day care center, was a talented seamstress, and worked until retirement as a bookkeeper for Macon Custom Signs. She served her church as a teacher, choir member and deacon. Even after retirement she served in the Macon Optimist Club, played in Magnolia Manor's washboard band, and helped Hospice care for ill patients, sitting with those with Alzheimer's for years.
Visitations for friends and family will be at Snow's Memorial Chapel, 746 Cherry Street Macon, Georgia, from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 and at Vineville Baptist Church Visitor's Reception Center from 10-11am on Thursday, May 6, 2010 prior to the funeral service which will be held at 11 am at Vineville Baptist Church located at 2591 Vineville Avenue Macon, Georgia. Rev. John M. "Tripp" Martin, III and Rev. W. Alan Mitchell will officiate. Interment will be beside her husband and child at New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, 1839 New Bethel Road, Riddleville, Georgia at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Vineville Baptist Church Endowment Fund, 2591 Vineville Avenue Macon, Georgia 31204 or to the Hal E. and Geneva Johnson Scholarship Fund c/o Mercer University, 1400 Coleman Avenue Macon, Georgia 31201.
