Mrs. Gladys Wilson Spight of 419 North Main Street in Davisboro died Saturday July 12 in the Regency Hospital in Macon following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday July 15 in the First Baptist Church of Sandersville. The Rev. Lee Lacey and Rev. Jimmy Harris will officiate with burial in the Davisboro Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Hartley, Jim Crooms, Mark West, Andy Yates, Charles Lee, Stan Brown, Horace Armstrong, and Jimmy Armstrong.

Mrs. Spight was born on May 15, 1917 in Washington County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Walter C. Wilson and the late Lennie Keen Wilson. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women with a degree in home economics. Later she received her master’s degree from the University of Georgia. She was married to the late Thomas Spight. She worked for the University of Georgia Extendion Service in Hancock and Green County for 22 years and retired in 1978. She traveled extensively in the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe, China, Australia and New Zealand. Mrs. Spight went on two mission trips, one to the Republic of Georgia and one to Kenya. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville and had served as a Sunday school teacher. She was the first woman to serve on the Davisboro City Council and the first female Mayor pro-tem. Mrs. Spight served on the library board since 1988 and was a charter member of the Greensboro Pilot Club and a member of the Washington County Pilot Club since 1978. She was a member of the Georgia Baptist Women’s Missionary Union and served on the executive board from 1996 til 2000. She taught Sunday school for over 45 years. Mrs. Spight was a Life Member of the Washington County Historical Society. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was an active participant in many volunteer activities.

Survivors are her children, Thomas Spight, Jr. and his wife Sheryl of Lawrenceville, Cornelia Spight Copelan of Washington, N.C., Becky Spight Shennan and her husband George of West Columbia, S.C. and Jimmy Harris of Davisboro, five grandchildren, Kimberly Spight Howell and her husband Kirk, Thomas Spight III and his wife Tasha, Noel Copelan and his wife Celine, James R. Shennan and Rebekah A. Shennan, a great grandchild, Thomas Spight IV.

May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville is in charge of the arrangements.

The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday evening. The family suggests that donations be made to the Camp Pinnacle at Clayton, Georgia.
