Major (Ret) Grace Womble, age 91, of Warthen died on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at her residence following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 14, in the Union Baptist Church near Warthen. Reverend Robert Cash and Reverend Roy Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.
Pallbearers will be David Smith, Forrest Burson, Lu Twedell, Fred Condit, Chris Vaden, Ray Moon, and Maura Peavy.
Major (Ret) Womble was a native of Washington County, the daughter of the late Forrest Leo Womble and the late Nannie Lou Smith Womble. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Mae Womble and LaVerne Womble Burson-Cook.
As a young child she grew up on the family home in Warthen, Georgia. Upon graduation from Georgia State College for Women (currently Georgia College) in 1945, she initially taught at the high school level before joining the United States Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in 1950. Major (Ret) Womble served with distinction for 20 years both overseas (Korea and Germany) and at several installations in the United States before retiring in 1970. She then returned home to care for her mother and sister while performing vital volunteer work within the community.
She was an active member of the Union Baptist Church serving as church historian, clerk and deacon. She was a member of the Warthen Community Club, the Washington County Historical Society, and the Pilot Club.
Survivors are her sister, Ruth Womble Smith of Milledgeville and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Sunday.
