Gregory John Jones

Milledgeville

Gregory (Greg) John Jones, (68), died on the evening of Friday, January 30th, in Milledgeville, GA after a long and hard-fought battle with congenital heart failure. He was surrounded by his immediate family.

Greg was born May 8th, 1957, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to William and Lois Jones. It was his time growing up in the northern Midwest that instilled in him a deep love and affection for cold, snowy weather. He spent most of his childhood and adolescence moving around the country with his family while his father worked for IBM.

Greg settled in Georgia and graduated from Georgia College with a BS in environmental sciences. He would then go on to work as a paramedic in Milledgeville, GA. He eventually earned a master’s degree and began working at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, GA. Greg took pride in being part of a collective effort to cure and prevent infectious diseases all over the world. He enjoyed the international travel his career provided and always made sure to bring home beautiful pieces of art and unique culinary treats to share with his family.

Greg retired from the CDC in 2019 and began enjoying this new chapter in life as a grandfather. He used his free time to help others, whether it was donating to local food banks, stocking the Milledgeville Free Fridge, or writing grants for his friends’ homelessness outreach project, The Love Center, in Augusta, GA. He believed that it was up to us as individuals to be kinder to one another, and to help those who cannot help themselves. He envisioned a better future for all of us through this practice. He was an avid music enthusiast and a talented guitarist. Greg shared his musical passion with his only grandchild, Bowie, and it was not uncommon to find them dancing together in the living room late at night. He loved the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed sharing his fondness for football with his son, Sam, and baseball with his daughter, Abigail. Greg also admired the outdoors and advocated for environmental preservation. Fishing, camping, hiking, bird watching, boating, and gardening were some of his favorite outdoor activities. He was a very talented cook and BBQ enthusiast who loved to experiment in the kitchen and share his homemade meals with his family and friends.

Greg is survived by his wife of 38 years, Barbara, his daughter Abigail, his son, Sam, and his grandson, Bowie; his three siblings, Kathy Jones, Laura (Art) Ferguson, and Mike (Stephanie) Jones; several nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lois.

Greg will be remembered for his sense of humor, his genuine kindness towards his fellow man, and his belief in equality and community among all of us under God’s love.

Private services will be held at a later date at his home in Milledgeville, GA in celebration of his long and prosperous life. His family asks that donations be made in Greg’s memory to First Presbyterian Church Food Bank (210 S. Wayne St., Milledgeville, GA 31061), the Christian Life Center (P.O. Box 5057, Sandersville, GA 31082), or The Love Center (1739 Fenwick St, Augusta, GA, 30904).
