Mr. Hartwell Milton Hood, Jr., age 79, of Sandersville, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2016 in an Augusta hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at the Sandersville United Methodist Church with burial in Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville. Reverend Dr. Stan Littleton, pastor of Sandersville United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Robert Harrell, Ronnie Colson, John Duggan, Tommy Cain, Craig Henry, Stacey Peavy, Scott Chapman and Mike Martin. Honorary pallbearers will be Lamar Everett, Hub Dent, Richard Welch and Hubert May.
Mr. Hood was a native and life-long resident of Washington County, the son of the late Hartwell M. Hood, Sr. and Pearl Smith Hood. He was preceded in death by his son, William Edwin Hood. Mr. Hood was a graduate of Sandersville High School and was a veteran of the United States Navy. While working full-time for Southern Bell Telephone Company and raising his family, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Georgia College and graduated Magna Cum Laude; he was a member of the honor society, Phi Kappa Phi. Following 41 years of service, Mr. Hood retired from American Telephone and Telegraph. He was a member of Sandersville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed reading, cooking, hunting, fishing, riding with his dog in the afternoons, and gathering with friends to watch sports – especially when his grandchildren were involved.
Survivors are: the love of his life and devoted wife of 52 years, Patricia Walton Hood of Sandersville; his daughter Jana Hood Joiner and her husband Steve also of Sandersville; a granddaughter, Jena Joiner Batrous and her husband, Joseph of Camak; a grandson, Samuel Ray Joiner; a sister, Maitland Smith Henry and her husband, Dan all of Sandersville; nieces and nephews; and his buddy, Bubba.
The family suggests donations be made to the Sandersville United Methodist Church building fund P.O Box 611, Sandersville, GA. 31082 and or to Brentwood School, P.O. Box 955, Sandersville, GA. 31082.
The family will be at the Hood residence on Hwy. 24 East, Sandersville and they will receive friends at the May and Smith Funeral Home on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
