Mrs. Helen Roberts Brannen, age 96, of Watkinsville died Sunday morning, December 1, 2013, in the Iris Place in Athens. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 4th, in the May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sandersville with burial in the Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville. The Reverend Mickey Lynn will officiate.
Mrs. Brannen was a native of Jefferson County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Augustus Lee Roberts and the late Belle Webster Roberts and the wife of the late John Thomas Brannen. She grew up in Washington County and was a 1943 graduate of Sandersville High School. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia and received her Master’s Degree in Business Education from George Peabody College. Mrs. Brannen was a retired teacher having taught business education courses in Green County, Clark County and Walton County. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens. Mrs.Brannen was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Athens Women’s Club and the Watkinsville Garden Club. She loved flowers. She was a humanitarian in caring for her fellowman and in her service to others in the nursing home. She supported the extension service and the 4-H clubs with her husband John, who was the Oconee County Extension Agent.
Survivors are her nieces and nephew, Donna Lynn of LaGrange, Beverly Tarleton of Cumming, Cheryl Prichard and Penny Gheesling both of Colbert, Denise Bickers of White Plains, Jill Reid of Indian Trail, NC, Melanie Eberhardt of Macon and George Dyar of Gainesville, and several great nieces and nephews.
The family suggests donations be made to the Nathanael Green Academy, P. O. Box 109, Siloam, Georgia 30665.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 10:30 A.M. until the hour of service on Wednesday.
