Dr. Hiram Jackson

Dr. Hiram M. Jackson, 89, of Milledgeville, GA., passed away on June 30, 2015. He was born February 12, 1926, in Juliette, Ga. He grew up and graduated from high school in Eastman, GA. He then spent two years at Emory University taking pre-dental studies where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In 1948, he graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry where he was in Psi Omega Fraternity. After six years of active duty in military service, he opened a dental practice in Sandersville, GA. Upon retiring, he moved to Lake Sinclair in Milledgeville, GA. He and his wife loved to travel and learn the cultures of other people. They visited many countries located over four continents.

Hiram served in the Navy in World War II, the Air Force in the Korean War, and retired as a full colonel from the Georgia Army National Guard after 28 years of military service. His awards consisted of the World War II Service and Victory ribbons, the Commendation Medal, Korean Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation with four battle stars, the Korean Service Medal from the South Korean government, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

While living in Sandersville, Hiram was a member of the First United Methodist Church, past- chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sandersville Public Schools, and past-president of the Sandersville Rotary Club. While living in Milledgeville, he was past-Director of Milledgeville Country Club, past-Chairman of the Georgia College & State University Foundation, and past-Member of Georgia Military College Foundation. He was instrumental in organizing and founding of the “Learning in Retirement” program at Georgia College. He was proud of being a member of the “Sons of American Revolution” organization.

Hiram is survived by his wife of (67) years, Nell Smith Jackson of Milledgeville, GA; a son, Walker M. Jackson (Charlotte) of Auburn, AL.; two daughters, Kathleen J. Martin (Charles) and Lauren J. Gould (Robin), both of Milledgeville, GA. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Cory A. Smith of Atlanta, GA, Ben S. Jackson (Frances) of Tyler, TX, Bonnie J. Capps (Matthew) of Mobile, AL., two great-grandchildren, Ford S. Jackson and Mary Nell Capps. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Mabel P. Jackson of Eastman and Statesboro, GA.; his siblings, Dr. John L. Jackson of Statesboro, GA., Elsie Dawkins of Butte, LA., and Thelma Adams of Statesboro, GA.

The family will be at Williams Funeral Home and Crematory for visitation from 1:00-2:00 PM Thursday, July 2 with a memorial service following at 2:00 PM in the chapel. Burial will be private. If desired, the family respectfully suggests that memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 366 Log Cabin Road, Milledgeville, GA., 31061.
