Horace Anderson Mathis Jr.

November 7, 1927 — December 31, 2009

Mr. Horace A. Mathis Jr., age 82, of Linton Road in Sandersville, died Thursday, December 31, 2009 at the Washington County Extended Care Facility following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at 2:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Sandersville with burial in Zeta Cemetery in Tennille. Rev. Marlon Lastinger and Rev. Lee Lacey will officiate.

Mr. Mathis was native and life long resident of Washington County the son of the late Horace A. Mathis Sr. and the late Mary Lennie Cooper Mathis. He retired as plant manager of Burgess Pigment Company after 43 years of service and also served as a former company vice president and a member of the Burgess Board of Directors. Mr. Mathis had a long career in public service serving as a Lieutenant for the Sandersville Fire Department then serving as a member of Council, Mayor Pro Tem and Mayor being elected in 1982 and retiring in 1999. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville and the Sandersville Lions Club. Mr. Mathis was selected as the Washington County Citizen of the Year in 1998 by the Sandersville Rotary Club and was a US Army Veteran.

Survivors include his wife Patricia S. Mathis of Sandersville, a son William H. Mathis of Atlanta, family member Franklin Pate also of Atlanta, his sister Amelia Ivey of Richmond VA and nieces and nephews.

The family will be at the Mathis residence on Linton Road in Sandersville and will receive friends Saturday from 4 to 6pm at the May and Smith Funeral Home.
