October 1, 1955 — February 7, 2026

Greensboro, NC

James Benjamin Amerson, III, age 70, known to family and friends as Jay or J.B. passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2026, as a result of a recent injury. A service to celebrate his life will be held for his family and friends at 10:30 A.M., on Thursday, February 26th in May and Smith Funeral Home chapel.

Jay was born in Sandersville, the son of the late James Benjamin Amerson, Jr. and the late-Jeanette Jones Amerson. Jay graduated from Brentwood School in 1973 and pursued a fulfilling lifelong career with Colonial Pipeline. Jay loved his career and retired after 37 years as a Maintenance Supervisor with special focus on energy pipeline transfer. One of his jobs took him to Alaska to work on the Alaska pipeline. He lived his life after Sandersville in Greensboro NC. Growing up, Jay and his brother Ben enjoyed traveling across the US with their parents as this was a requirement of their Father's job. Because they moved around a lot, Ben and Jay became each other’s best friends and this relationship continued throughout their lives. The two loved to talk about College Football especially if the "Dawgs" were playing. Jay also enjoyed gardening (especially raising tomatoes), playing golf, shooting skeet, NASCAR races and his Papillon dogs. At the request of teachers in the Greensboro School system, Jay took the dogs into the schools teaching the students about the dogs and allowing them to enjoy them.

He is proceeded in death by his mother, Jeanette J. Amerson, and father, J. Ben Amerson, Jr. Jay is survived by his brother, Ben L. Amerson (Kim) of Sandersville, his son Michael Amerson of St. Simons Island, GA, his wife Kathy Jarrett of Greensboro, NC, niece and nephew, Kristin Hooks and Benji Amerson, and beloved aunts and cousins.
