James "Jimmy" Andrew Smith

Mr. James A. Smith, age 86, of Davisboro, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at Washington County Extended Care Facility, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 1, 2023 at May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Davisboro City Cemetery. Reverend Danny Thomas and Reverend Fred Garrett will officiate with Ashely Bridges as a special guest speaker. Pallbearers will be Doug Watkins, Ashley Bridges, Christopher Bridges, Holden Yarbrough, Joseph “Trent” Brown and Connor Cowart.

Mr. Smith was a native of Washington County, the son of the late Floyd Wright Smith, Sr. and Mary Sammons Smith. Mr. Smith was a loving uncle, having no children of his own, adopting his nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and nephews as his children. He was affectionately known as “Jimbo, Bimbo, Jabo and Uncle”. He was an avid fisherman, who used a leaf-spring truck part to rally worms for bait. His favorite meals included black-eyed peas with chewing tobacco, referred to as chaw, for his dessert. He never met a stranger and spoke kindly to everyone. He was a devoted son and brother, becoming his father's caretaker until his death. At the age of 82, he started staying with his elderly sister, Louise Smith Bridges, at her home in the evenings until the time of her death, helping to care for her during her time of need. He was a farmer's hand from the age of 12 until he retired at 79.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Floyd Wright Smith, Jr., John R. Smith, Frankie Smith; and sisters, Sally (George) Bragg, Rosa (Carl) Smith, Annie (Grover) Smith, Louise (Jewell) Bridges, Martha Jean Stubbs;  nephew, Wayne Tapley; and great- nephew, Gregg Bridges.

Mr. Smith is survived by his brother; Louis (Kay) Smith of Sandersville; sister, Lois (Billy) Johnson of Gibson; brother-in-law Richard Stubbs of Panama City, Florida; nieces and nephews; Larry (Laverne) Bridges, Connie Bridges Tapley, John (Teresa) Bridges, all of Sandersville and Gary “Hoss” (Patty) Bridges of Tennille; great-nieces and nephews; Angela (Travis) Yarbrough, Michae (Josh) Edwards, Jada Bridges, William (Laura) Tapley, Alicia (Roberto) Monroy, Danielle (Jamie) Bridges, Ashley (Jessica) Bridges, Leigh Anna (John David) Zaenglein; great- great nieces and nephews, Linda (Kevin) Holata, Christopher (Taylor) Bridges, Holden Yarbrough, Joseph “Trent” (Haley) Brown, Carmen Rodriguez and Connor Cowart; and many other family and friends.

The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 1st.
