James Lamar Cox

January 5, 1958 — March 21, 2025

Ocala

James Lamar Cox, 67 of Ocala, FL, passed away peacefully March 21st, 2025, surrounded by family. A graveside service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. in Brownwood Cemetery, Sandersville, Georgia.

He was born January 5th, 1958, in Tampa, FL, where he grew up and became a lover of the beach and sports through high school. He would share stories often about running track in school and training on the beach with his father. He loved many types of music, fishing, and banana pudding.

After high school James began his career in telecommunications. His career took him all around the world, traveling to more places than most could think of. He was a wonderful storyteller, many of them about his travels. Some of the most memorable included England, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan, France, Denmark, Columbia, Russia, Suriname, Grenada, Curacao, St Thomas, Italy, the list goes on and on. He always believed the best lessons learned were “traveled”.

James was married twice, having a son and daughter with each wife. His children all treasure the way he invested in all of them. A life coach and a sports coach to each of his children and grandchildren. Track and baseball were his favorite sports, but he would show up on any field for his loved ones. His grandchildren will carry his love of sports with them.

His focus later in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren across the US and his mother and brother at home in FL.  Grandfather was an unwritten poet, you could feel his poems.

Survivors include his mother, Jacqueline Cox; his best friend and brother Ed Cox and wife Rhonda Cox; ex-wives Jill Boone and Letitia Cox Boswell; sons Wesley Cox and James Cox; daughters Jessica Lanier and husband Jason Lanier, and Champaigne Cox and husband Akhil Bhimala; grandchildren Bryson Newsome, Haleigh Newsome, Brody Newsome, Alana Scarboro, Rayne Bhimala and Dani Bhimala. He is preceded in death by his father Claud Cox.
