James Lamar Henson

Sandersville

Mr. James Lamar Henson, age 80, Sandersville, died Monday, July 11, 2022 at the Washington County Extended Care Facility following an extended illness.  A funeral service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, July 14 th at 11:00 a.m. at Sisters Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.  Reverends Jason Loggins, Ronnie Duncan and Danny Thomas will officiate.  Active and former deacons of the Church will serve as pallbearers.  The New Beginnings Sunday School Class and Gideons will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Lamar was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the son of the late Julius Andrew Henson and the late Mamie Kate Todd Henson.  He was a graduate of Washington County High School and Georgia Southern with a bachelor's degree in education.  Lamar excelled at baseball playing in high school, college and semi pro.   He worked as a biology teacher and baseball coach for both Baldwin and Washington County Boards of Education.  Lamar was also employed as an educator for the Sandersville Youth Development Center.  Along with his brother Larry, Lamar created Henson's Bait and Tackle, on East McCarty Street in Sandersville, in which he owned and operated until his retirement. Lamar was a lifelong and faithful member of Sisters Baptist Church, where he served his church in numerous leadership roles including serving as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.  Lamar was a soldier for the lord and worked faithfully through the Gideons and ministering to correctional institutions as well as nursing homes.  He was an avid Georgia Bulldog and Atlanta Braves fan.  In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his two brothers Robert Henson and Larry Henson.

Lamar is survived by many cousins and faithful friends.
