Janet A. Cowan

March 2, 1917 — August 9, 2017

Janet A. Cowan passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at the age of 100. Janet was born in Medford, Massachusetts on March 2, 1917. She spent her early childhood in Medford before moving to New York, where she graduated from St. Agnes High School in Rockville Center in 1934. She later attended Simmons College. She worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance in New York where she met a man on the bus. That man would later become her husband on September 6, 1942.   He returned from the war in 1944 and they settled in Valley Stream, New York where their four children were born.  They moved to Macon, Georgia in 1955. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ferrin Cole, her father, Frank Howie Cole and her husband, Richard Glendenning Cowan. Janet lived in Macon from 1955 to 1976 when she moved to Sandersville, Georgia. She later moved to live with her daughter in Fulton, Missouri and then in Champaign, Illinois.  Following her 95th birthday, she moved to Atlanta where she lived until her passing. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church while living in Macon and continued her service in faith at St. Williams Catholic Church in Sandersville. Janet is survived by her sister, Elleen Maresca and by her four children, Richard G. Cowan of Pendleton SC, Donald R. Cowan (Paige) of Atlanta GA, Mary Ellen Crawford (James) of Philpot KY and Michael L. Cowan (Linda) of Sandersville GA. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, her 19 greatgrandchildren and her 2 great-great grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for August 19, 2017 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Williams Catholic Church in Sandersville, GA.   She will be missed greatly by all those who knew and loved her.
