Mrs. Janis Harris Griswell, age 87, of Sandersville, passed away suddenly Monday evening August 14th 2023. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, August 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Sisters Baptist Church with burial in Washington Memorial Gardens. Reverend Ronnie Duncan will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Andrews, Richard Welch, Brandon Griswell, Fred Garrett, Earl Johnson and Tony Anthony. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4:00-6:00 pm at May and Smith Funeral Home.
Mrs. Griswell was born in Macon and reared in Roberta, the daughter of the late Marion Wesley Harris and the late Gladys Baggarley Harris. She graduated from Crawford County High School and moved to Atlanta where she attended business school and began her working career. A resident of Manchester, she was a homemaker and reared her children. In 1964, Mrs. Griswell moved to Sandersville, where she worked as a seamstress at Royal Manufacturing prior to working at Washington Manufacturing. She retired from Washington County Regional Medical Center as an insurance clerk. Mrs. Griswell was an active member of Sisters Baptist Church where she formerly taught children's Sunday school. She was an avid reader and lived a life of doing things for others. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Griswell is predeceased by her son, Ricky Peterman.
Survivors are her loving husband of 59 years, Eugene Griswell of Sandersville; sons, Keith Peterman and his wife Annice of Simpsonville, SC., and Wesley Griswell and his wife Tracey of Gray; grandchildren, Brandon Griswell and Shayna Griswell; and sisters, Leda Starnes of Roberta and Melba Essaff of Lilburn.
