Mr. Jesse Ralph Carter, 98, of Waycross died early Thursday morning, July 9th, 2015, at his daughter’s residence in Tennille, Georgia after an extended illness. He was born in Odum, Georgia to the late Jesse Carter and Della Whitehead Carter.

Mr. Carter had made Waycross his home for the majority of his life. He served during World War II with the United States Merchant Marines. Mr. Carter worked as a steam pipe fitter for the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local # 177 out of Brunswick, Georgia. He was an avid golfer and loved to make cane syrup. Mr. Carter was a member of Second Baptist Church in Waycross where he served as a deacon. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Carter, a daughter, Martha Carter, a sister, Myrtice Binkard and a brother, J.C. Carter.

Mr. Carter is survived by his children, Pat Lyons of Tennille, Georgia, Caroline Callahan and her husband Rod of Forsyth, Georgia, Barbara Smith and her husband David of Blackshear, Buddy Carter and his wife Jennifer of Tampa, Florida, his grandchildren, John Lyons and his wife Jane of Carrollton, Cathy Lyons of Atlanta, Wendy Harbor of Dublin, Stephanie Smith and her husband Mark of Blackshear, Jessica Drury and her husband Chris of Blackshear, Chris Carter and his wife Jamie of New Jersey, Derek Carter and his wife Aimee of Tampa, Ann Vaughan and her husband James of Forsyth, seventeen great grandchildren, a brother, Roy Carter of Hinesville, Georgia, a sister, Marie Ford of Savannah, Georgia and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m., Monday at Second Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, beginning at 1:30 p.m., in the church sanctuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Second Baptist Church, “Television Ministry”, 301 Tomberlin Road, Waycross, Georgia 31503.
