Mr. Jewell Bridges, age 85, of 1867 New Road in Sandersville died Sunday January 4 at his residence following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday January 7 in the Sisters Baptist Church in Sandersville with burial in the Washington County Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Sandersville. The Rev. Fred Garrett and Rev. Keith Pritchett will officiate. Pallbearers will be Barry Evans Bridges, Kenny Bridges, Stan Johnson, Terry Smith, Johnny Boyd and Jim Schouten.
Mr. Bridges was a native of Washington County, Georgia, the son of the late Kinch Bridges and the late Sallie Lord Bridges. He was a farmer. Mr. Bridges was a member of the Washington County Farm Bureau, The Woodmen of the World, and the American Legion Post #94. Mr. Bridges served in the United States Army in World War II in the Pacific. Mr. Bridges was named USDA District Conservationist in 1989 and was twice the Washington County Conservationist of the Year by Woodmen of the World . Mr. Bridges was a member of the American Soy Bean Association and the American Wheat Association. He was a former Director of the Farmers Mutual Exchange. Mr. Bridges was a member of the Downs Church of God.
Survivors are his wife, Louise Smith Bridges of Sandersville, his children, Connie Bridges (Wayne) Tapley of Sandersville, Larry (Laverne) Bridges of Sandersville, John (Teresa) Bridges of Sandersville and Gary “Hoss” (Patty) Bridges of Tennille, seven grandchildren, Angie Yarbrough, Michae Bridges, William Tapley, Alicia Bridges, Danielle Bridges Cowart, Ashley B. Bridges and Leigh Anna Reynolds, eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday evening.
