John William Callaway, age 90, known as DahDah to his family and friends, entered into eternity on January 11, 2023. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on January 29, 2023 at Pierce Memorial United Methodist Church in Sparta at 3pm. Reverend. Darrell McGinnis and Reverend Jerry Bradley will officiate. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary immediately following the service. Burial will be private.
John was born August 20, 1932 in Hancock County, to the late Annie Fisher Callaway and Roy D. Callaway, Sr. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roy D. Callaway, Jr. and granddaughter-in-love, Brittney Callaway (Christopher).
John leaves behind the love of his life Bette J. Callaway, to whom he had been marred to for 72 years, Daughter, Dianne C. Sheppard (Cliff) of Sandersville, Son, John I. Callaway (Carol) of Sparta, Grandchildren, Trey Sheppard (Emily), Mitch Sheppard (Brannen) of Sandersville, Brian Renfroe of Milledgeville, Christopher Callaway, and Joseph Callaway of Sparta. Great grandchildren, Ford Sheppard, Anne Marie Sheppard, Emerson Sheppard, Jones Sheppard, Pierce Sheppard, Mitchell Sheppard, Sims Sheppard, River Renfroe, Ava Renfroe and Rebekah Neal.
John attended school at Sparta High. He was a City of Sparta Police Office and for most of his career he was self-employed as a carpenter and cattle farmer. He retired as the administrator of the Sparta Housing Authority. He was a member of Pierce Memorial United Methodist Church.
Everyone enjoyed listening to him recall stories from his childhood and former days. His memory remained perfect until the end of his life.
He was meticulous about all of his projects. His favorite Quote: ‘When a job is once begun, never leave it until the work is done. It doesn’t matter if it’s large or small, do it right or not at all’.
