John Martin Grosshans

April 25, 1944 — November 13, 2024

Atlanta

It is with deep sorrow and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of John Martin Grosshans, on November 13, 2024. Born on April 25, 1944, in Colorado Springs, CO. John was a cherished son of the late John Hollis and Hazel Roberts Grosshans. He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend whose life was filled with generosity, warmth, and humor. John is survived by his wife, Kathy; his son, John Roberts, his wife, Bonnie, and their children, Holly Hayes, Benton, and Heidi; and his daughter, Katie, her husband, Scott, and their daughter, Haden.

After attending University of Montana, John embarked on a lifelong journey devoted to nature, beginning as a fire tower park ranger in Arizona, where he cultivated a love for the outdoors. Later in life, John became a geologist for a kaolin mining company in Sandersville, Georgia, where he met his beloved wife, Kathy. Together, they built a family, welcoming their children, John Roberts and Katie, where they lived in Walden Woods in Sandersville, GA for over 35 years.

John was a passionate geologist whose love for the earth was matched only by his love for exploring it. Whether he was hiking rugged trails or sharing his knowledge of rocks and minerals, he found joy and purpose in the natural world. His passion took him to breathtaking landscapes, where he felt most at home among mountains, rivers, and open skies. John’s passion for geology extended beyond his work, as he taught elementary school children about the earth’s wonders, frequently leading tours through the mines to help kids find fossils and shark teeth. After his retirement from the kaolin company, he taught mining safety at Oconee Fall Line Technical College.

An avid camper, hiker, and backpacker, John shared many mountain adventures with his son, John Roberts, exploring the beauty of the wilderness together. He was also a devoted Boy Scout leader who guided many memorable scouting trips throughout Georgia, sharing his love for the outdoors with the next generation.

John had a remarkable gift for giving everyone a nickname. These weren’t just casual monikers, they were personal, thoughtful, and always brought a smile. Each nickname was like a little badge of affection, reminding people that they were seen, valued, and truly special. In a world where it’s easy to feel anonymous, John’s playful names made everyone feel unique and connected to his warmth.

A dedicated fan of the Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Tech, and Ohio State, he loved cheering on his teams each season. A man of many talents, John was also a skilled woodworker, often found in his workshop crafting beautiful pieces. As a member of Sandersville United Methodist Church, he demonstrated a steadfast faith and a commitment to helping others. Known for his selflessness, John always put others first, and his family and friends will remember his kindness, humor, and the welcoming spirit he brought into every room.
