Dr. John Robert Ward, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and esteemed surgeon passed away peacefully Thursday, March 13, 2025, at Tennille Retirement Home at the age of 79. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church, Sandersville. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
John leaves behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Cyndy Hartzog Ward, whom he adored and shared a deep and abiding love; his son and daughter-in-law John-Robert and Jennifer Ward; grandsons, John-Brooks Ward and Joseph Sinclair Ward. He is also survived by his sister Katherine (Tom) Keckiesen and his brother Billy (Ann) Ward. He is preceded in death by his parents Jay and Elloeen Ward.
Dr Ward dedicated more than four decades of his life to saving others. His academic journey took him to the University of South Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Biology, followed by medical internship at the Medical University of South Carolina. He went on to do his general surgery residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He was a member of The Mortez Surgical Society, American College of Surgeons, and the Southeastern Surgical College. He served as Major in the United States Army.
Dr Ward was known to his colleagues, nurses, staff and patients as a compassionate, caring physician who always put the care of his patients first. He was a beacon of light and hope in his community, touching countless lives through his service and kindness. Dr Ward was a true leader and mentor always willing to share his knowledge and experience with others.
John’s zest for life was evident in his varied interests. From an early age, he possessed a particular fondness for running. He was often seen on the hospital track between rounds or running around the community. Growing up in Darlington, South Carolina, he possessed a love for Nascar and made many fond memories with family at the Isle of Palms and Folly Beach. Listening to Bob Dylan music with his son and dancing to The Drifters with his lovely wife brought John great joy and peace until the end.
To say that John was loving is an understatement. He was a man whose warmth radiated in his every action, from careful stitches in surgery to the tender hugs he gave his beloved son and grandsons. Being surrounded by family and friends was not just his greatest joy, but also his life’s essence. His legacy is one of love, and it is that love that will continue to resonate in the lives of those who had the privilege to know him. John will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his remarkable impact on his family and community.
