Joseph Wayne Matthews

Mr. Joseph Wayne Matthews Sr., age 68, of Tennille, died Monday, October 3, 2016 at his residence. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 6th at Washington County Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Reverend Bobby Williford officiating.

Wayne was a native of Washington County, the son of the late Crawford L. “Cotton” Matthews and the late Ila Gibson Matthews. He served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and worked as an auto mechanic and a carpenter. He lived in both Tennessee and Maryland prior to returning home to Tennille. Wayne loved to go camping and fishing.

Survivors include, his son, Joseph W. “Bo” Matthews, Jr. and his wife Rhonda of Tennille; grandchildren, Jessica Tarr and her husband Kyle of Gibson, Anna Adams and her husband Aaron of Sandersville and Zachery Matthews and his wife Anna of Harrison; great grandchildren, Brodie Tarr, Matthew Adams, Levon Adams, Lizzy Matthews, Elie Joseph Matthews and Ila Nicole Matthews; companion and sweetheart, Linda Matthews of Knoxville, Maryland.

The family will be at the Matthews residence on E. Church Street in Tennille and they will receive friends on Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the May and Smith Funeral Home.
