Katherine Elizabeth Cummings Field

Mrs. Katherine Elizabeth Cummings Field, age 90, of Sandersville died Sunday morning December 11, 2011 in the Heritage Inn. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 15th, in the May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sandersville with burial in the Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville.

Mrs. Field was born June 26, 1921 to Mark and Ernestine Tanner Cummings. Her brother Buford was born four years later. Their mother, Ernestine, died in 1926. Her father, Mark, married his sister-in-law, Bertha Tanner, to whom Hilda Cummings and Eddie Cummings were born. Elizabeth (Lib) grew up in Chalker and Warthen until 1937 when she married John L. (Red) Redfern. They had one child, Vesta Ernestine (Tina) in 1940.

Her husband died in December 1941. She married Richard Field, of Michigan, in 1943 while he was stationed at Camp Gordon during World War II. In 1944 they had a daughter, Beth, and later a son, Rick, born in 1948. They moved to Michigan right after the war, where they remained for many years. After Richard’s death in 1968, Lib earned a nursing degree in Florida in 1975. She lived and worked back and forth between Florida, Michigan and Georgia until 2005, when her daughter, Beth, and son, Rick, both died six months apart. She then settled in Georgia and resided at the Heritage Inn in Sandersville.

Survivors are her daughter, Ernestine Redfern (Tina) Green and her husband Charles of Sterling Heights, MI, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, a brother, Buford N. Cummings of Warner Robins and a brother-in-law, Roy Etheridge of Sandersville.

The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 10:00 A.M. on Thursday until the hour of service.
