Mrs. LaVerne Womble Burson-Cook, age 86, of Cook Street in Sandersville, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at her residence following an extended illness. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 31st at 2:00 p.m. at the May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery North of Warthen. Reverends Roy Smith and Rick Freeman will officiate. Pallbearers will be Forrest Burson, Chris Cook, Blair Cook, Kerry Cook, Fred Conditt, Joshua Kennedy and Zachary Kennedy.

Mrs. Burson-Cook was a native of Washington County, the daughter the late Forrest Leo Womble and the late Nannie Lou Smith Womble. She was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women and spent her working career as an administrative assistant and executive secretary working for the Southern Baptist Convention and Safeco Insurance Company. She was a long time resident of Atlanta and an active member of the Brookhaven Baptist Church where she ran the church library which she was instrumental in establishing. Mrs. Burson-Cook possessed a lifetime love of volunteering to help those in need. She was a current member of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville and she is predeceased by her husbands, William H. Burson and Julius Lawrence “Pup” Cook, Jr.

Survivors are: her children, Nancy Leigh B. McFarland of Sacramento, CA, Mildred Louise “Lu” B. Twedell and her husband David of Winter Park, FL, and Forrest Brooks Burson and his wife Karen of Tucker; grandsons, Joshua Kennedy and Zachary Kennedy; stepsons, Chris Cook and his wife Julie of Milledgeville, Blair Cook and his wife Rhonda of Evans and Kerry Cook and his wife Patricia of Riddleville; and her sisters, Major Grace Womble, ret. of Warthen and Ruth W. Smith of Milledgeville.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 30th from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Union Baptist Church, c/o Chris Vaden, 2830 Mills Lindsey School Road, Warthen, GA. 31094, or to the Sandersville/Washington County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 71, Sandersville, GA. 31082.
