Leona Sheppard Rogers

December 28, 1960 — February 5, 2023

Mrs. Leona Sheppard Rogers, age 62, of Laurel Drive, Sandersville, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023 following a brief illness.  A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, February 8 th at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with burial in Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville.  Reverend Lee Lacey and Mr. Mike Beckworth will officiate. Pallbearers will be Hank Heldreth, Daniel Heldreth, Matthew Heldreth, Jonathan Dawson and Lindsey Meeks. Beckworth/Anderson Sunday School Class and the Wednesday night kitchen volunteers will sit as honorary group. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at May and Smith Funeral Home.

Leona was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the daughter of the late Charles Edward Sheppard and the late Jean Miller Sheppard.  She was a 1979 graduate of Brentwood School.  Soon after graduation, Leona married her high school love, Rhonie Rogers, and began a life as a homemaker. She cherished the role of caregiver, first with her husband and children, then to her parents and finally to her granddaughters. Leona was a devoted member of First Baptist Church where she was active in her Sunday School Class and volunteered in the kitchen for Wednesday night suppers. She loved traveling to the beach and the mountains, watching the Braves and reading were some of her favorite pastimes. Leona was loved by many, and her memory will be cherished by those with whom she loved.

Survivors include, her husband of 40 years, Rhonie Rogers; children, Samuel Rogers (Kalen) of Brooklet and Amy Rogers (Lindsey Meeks) of Sandersville; grandchildren, Adleigh Rogers, Reagan Meeks and Nina Rogers; siblings, David Sheppard (Mary Ann) of Cartersville, Jessica S. Heldreth (Chuck) and Alan Sheppard (Mary Jo) all of Sandersville; and nieces and nephews.
