Mr. Lewis Marcus West, Sr., age 92, of Sandersville died on Thursday, October 22, 2015. Funeral services for Mr. West will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, October 24, in the First Baptist Church of Sandersville with burial in the Brownwood Cemetery. Reverend Lee Lacey and Minister Marlon Lastinger will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Charles Jordan, Billy Garner, Adrian Ashley, Steven Adams, Joe Sumner, Cliff Sheppard, Tony Tanner, Michael Harris and Horace Daniel. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Irwin Evans Men's Sunday School Class, Wendell Tompkins, Ben Tarbutton,Jr., Dr. Mark Harvey, Larry Smith, Billy Marchman, Lamar Everett, Sandy Mercer, Chris Irwin, Dr. Eddie Height, Bill Hall, Stacer Helton, Roan Miller, Roger Kicklighter, Dr. John Dickey and Tommy Walker.
Mr. West was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the son of the late Walter L. West, Sr. and the late Johnnie Sheppard West and the step son of the late Florence Sims West. He graduated from Sandersville High School in the Class of 1940. Mr. West attended Emory Junior College at Oxford and was a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy in 1944. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific during the invasion of Okinawa.
Mr. West was the owner of West Drug Store, which was started by his father in 1918. He was a member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville, served as youth Sunday school teacher for twenty five years and was a member of the Irwin Evans Sunday School Class. He was named Rotary Club Man of the Year in 1972. Mr. West was a member and past president of the Sandersville Lions Club, a member and past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a life member of the American Legion. He received the Silver Beaver Boy Scout Award. He was a former board member of the George D. Warthen Bank and a member and former Vice President of the Georgia Pharmaceutical Association. Mr. West was a member and Past President of the Washington County Historical Society, and the Washington County Community Concert Association.
Survivors are his wife of 68 years, Anita Tanner West; two sons, Lewis Marcus West, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Sandersville, and Robert Stanley West and his wife Connie of Sandersville; grandchildren, Nancy West Hortman and her husband Robert, Lewis M. West III and his wife Blakely, Laura West Kitchens and her husband Parker and Holly West; and three great-grandsons, West Hortman, Wills Hortman and Jack Kitchens.
The family suggest donations be made to the Washington County Historical Society for maintenance of the Brown House grounds, P. O. Box 6088, Sandersville, Georgia 31082.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Friday.
