Mr. Lonnie Silas McDonald, age 89, of Warthen, died Thursday, April 13, 2017 in an Augusta Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Warthen with burial in the church cemetery. Reverend Tim Powell, Reverend Billy Duggan and Reverend Gary Mimbs will officiate. Pallbearers will be B.J. Wasden, Stewart McDonald, Matthew Brown, Tyler Owens, PFC, Joseph B. Logue III, Nic Goodson, Aaron Clements, Clint Beasley, Logan Register, and Dwayne McDonald.
Mr. McDonald was a native of Glascock County, Georgia, the son of the late Jerry Calvin McDonald and the late Ollie Parish McDonald and his Mama, the late Lillian Yarbrough McDonald. He was the husband of the late Bertie Mae Sargent McDonald and the father of the late Barry A. McDonald. Mr. McDonald had lived in Washington County for many years. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. He enlisted in the United States Army in April of 1946 and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He began a career with the United States Postal Service in October of 1965 as a rural letter carrier in Warthen. He served in various positions with the postal service including being Postmaster of Warthen and retired as Sandersville Postmaster in August of 1990, but farming was his passion. He was a former director and president of the Washington County Farm Bureau, a member of the Georgia Farm Bureau, and an active member of the Georgia and Washington County Cattleman’s Association.
Survivors are his children; Lonna M. Deraney and her husband Danny of Mitchell, Ken P. McDonald and his wife Lynn of Tennille, Keith S. McDonald and his wife Robin of Warthen and Leigh M. Fitzgerald and her husband Bobby of Warthen; sister, Ruth McDonald Wille; grandchildren, Jeanne M. Hall and her husband Keith, Kim M. O’Neal, Denise D. Brown and her husband Benji, Kelli D. Kent , Lori D. Gibson and her husband Bubba, Stewart McDonald, Melanie McDonald, Lindsay M. Goodson and her husband Nic, Natalie M. Clements and her husband Aaron, B. J. Wasden, Brandi Fitzgerald, Brittany F. Beasley and her husband Clint and Blair F. Register and her husband Logan; and twenty three great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Bethlehem Baptist Church from 10:00 A. M. until service time at ll:00 A.M. on Saturday. The family suggest donations be made to the Bethlehem Baptist Church, P.O. Box 85, Warthen, Georgia 31094.
