Maitland Smith Henry, age 85, of North Harris Street, Sandersville, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, June 4th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of May and Smith Funeral Home and burial at Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville. Reverend Lee Lacey will officiate. Mrs. Henry’s family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service, also at the Funeral Home.
Maitland Jaqueline Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, daughter of the late John Thomas Smith and Maitland Nannie Sheppard Smith. Her mother died while she was an infant and Maitland was raised by her adoptive parents, Hartwell and Pearl Hood. She married Daniel Cason Henry young in life, a fruitful marriage that lasted for well over 50 years, until Dan’s death in 2018. Most of her life was spent as a homemaker and rearing her children. Maitland formerly worked at the Washington County Tax Commissioners office. She and Dan both cherished sports and could be seen at numerous community sporting events, especially when they involved one of their children or grandchildren. For years, Maitland was a member of the Twin City Country Club, where she excelled at golf and was named ladies club champion multiple times. Maitland was also a member of First Baptist Church of Sandersville. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She also loved to read. Maitland is predeceased by her parents, husband and son Daniel Craig Henry.
Survivors include her daughter, Susan Henry Whittle of Milledgeville; grandchildren William Charles Henry and his wife Kate, Carley Sinclair Henry and Zachary Cason Whittle; and great grandchildren, Hutch Henry and Holden Henry.
