Sandersville

Mr. Marcus Daniel "Pete" Hammock, Jr. , age 85, of Sandersville died on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Heritage Inn following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 27th at 2:00 P.M. in the Sandersville United Methodist Church with burial in the Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville. Reverend Dr. Joseph Buck IV and Reverend Sidney Lambert will officiate.

Mr. Hammock was a native of Washington County, the son of the late Marcus Daniel Hammock, Sr. and the late Trudie Parker Hammock. He was the founder and president of M. D. Hammock Oil Company until his semi-retirement in 2012. He served for six years representing the southeast on the Texaco Wholesale National Council. He also served on the founding advisory board of directors for Star-Mac and served on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Oilmen's Association. Mr. Hammock was an active member of the Sandersville United Methodist church serving on numerous boards and committees including the Foundation Board, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Administrative Board, Financial Board, and on the committee to renovate the sanctuary.

"Pete”, as he was affectionately known, was active in local organizations, serving as a board member of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and was a charter member and organizer of the Civitan Club. He was an army veteran of the Korean Conflict. At the age of 48 he decided to learn to fly and obtained a private pilot license and enjoyed flying with his son for many years.

He and his wife Jean were married for sixty years and enjoyed traveling. They had the privilege of visiting every continent and all of the United States. He enjoyed farming, gardening and was an enthusiastic fisherman.

Survivors are his wife, Jean Holton Hammock of Sandersville; a son, Marcus Daniel "Danny" Hammock III and his wife Susan of Sandersville; a sister, Pennie Meeks of Kenai, Alaska.

The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Sunday.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to the Sandersville United Methodist Church Foundation Fund or the Building Fund, P. O. Box 611, Sandersville, Georgia 31082.

May and Smith Funeral Directors in Sandersville is in charge of the arrangements.
