Mrs. Roughton was the oldest of six children of the late Leon Abbitt Lovett and the late Maude Lou Sterling Lovett of Wrightsville. She attended elementary school in Wrightsville and graduated from the Lucy Cobb Institute in Athens. To avoid having to go to a college where uniforms were required, she slipped out of the window and eloped with Julian Emory “Pop” Roughton at the age of 16. Together they spent many years operating the Union Dry Goods Co. in Sandersville, but they were both homebodies who enjoyed nothing more than spending time working in the yard. Mrs. Roughton was a talented seamstress and needleworker, and she enjoyed gardening, music, puzzles, and reading. She was an active member of Sandersville United Methodist Church for as long as she was able, a member of the Adult Fellowship Class, the Friendship Fellowship, Prime Timers, and the Silver Bells handbell group, and she was a willing volunteer wherever she was needed. For the last nine years she had resided at Heritage Inn of Sandersville. Mrs. Roughton was preceded in death by all of her siblings, and by her husband and their daughter, Julianne Roughton Cooke.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Roughton of Sandersville; three granddaughters, Luanne C. Brooker and her husband John, Kathy C. Williford of Sandersville, and Bobbie C. Weaver of Powder Springs; nine great-grandchildren, Missy Cordry Beavers, Christopher Weaver, John Brooker, Jr., Michael Brooker, Tommy Scott, Jennifer Scott Taylor, Tanya Rachels Ward, Charlie Williford, and Justin Sanner; twelve great-great grandchildren; and one great-great-great granddaughter.
The family will receive friends at the May and Smith Funeral Home Monday from 11am to 12 noon.
