Mark "Chip" Hammond, Jr.

Mr. Mark “Chip” Hammond, Jr. age 74, of North Lake Drive in Sandersville, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2022, at Heritage Inn following an extended illness. A viewing and visitation to celebrate Mr. Hammonds memory will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.

Mr. Hammond was born on April 2, 1947, in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of the late Mark Benjamin Hammond, Sr. and the late Dorothy Steuer Hammond. He grew up in Key Biscayne, Florida and was a graduate of Miami Edison High School in Miami, Florida and is known as “the only man to climb the Key Biscayne lighthouse.”  Later Mr. Hammond moved to Sandersville where he retired from IMERYS as a Calcine Operator. Mr. Hammond was a man of generosity, never meeting a stranger and always willing to offer a helping hand, often without being asked. He enjoyed scuba diving and being outdoors. Mr. Hammond was a very active and wonderful dad and grandpa, always there and available for his daughter and his four grandchildren. He was of the Episcopalian faith.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Hammond is proceeded in death by his sister, Marcia Hammond.

Survivors include, daughter Kimberly Hammond Kent (Mark) of Sandersville; grandchildren, Brittney Crow (Allison) of Warner Robins, Mark Austin Burgamy (Amanda), Sianna Hammond, and Gage Hammond, all of Sandersville; great grandchildren, Aiden Votipka, November Votipka, Ashton Burgamy, and Liam Burgamy; siblings, Barbara Horton and Dorothy “Dee” Hammond, both of Pensecola, FL, Sandy Hammond (Delinda) of Colorado, and Rachel Coats Greer of Memphis, TN; ex-wife, Linda Fulghum (Michael) of Byron; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 106 SRP Drive, Suite A, Evans, GA  30809
