Martha Newsome Tanner

December 6, 1923 — March 3, 2010

Mrs. Martha Newsome Tanner, age 86, of 4314 Sunhill-Grange Road in Sandersville died Wednesday March 3 in the Washington County Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday March 7 in the First Baptist Church of Sandersville. The Rev. Lee Lacey and Rev. Marlon Lastinger will officiate with burial in the Sisters Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Frank May, Billy Garner, Jamie Tanner, Wesley Tanner, Jon Tanner and Roan Miller.

Mrs. Tanner was a native and life long resident of Washington County, the daughter of the late Cecil Glenwood Newsome and the late Ola Hawkins Newsome. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a Batchelor of Science Degree in Dietitedics and a Bachelors Degree of Education. Mrs. Tanner was a teacher with the Washington County School System for over thirty one years. She taught science and home economics. Mrs. Tanner was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville, the Daughter of the American Revolution and the Tri Delta Sorority.

Survivors are her husband, Twiggs J. Tanner, Sr. of Sandersville, her children, Twiggs J. Tanner, Jr. and his wife Sandy of Milledgeville, Rosanne Tanner Gambill and her husband Mike of Oakwood, and Gary J. Tanner, Sr. of Sandersville, seven grandchildren, Wesley Tanner, Jamie Tanner, Kelly Howell, Lauren Tanner Avrett, Jon Tanner, Abby tanner and Jackson Tanner.

The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Saturday.
