Mrs. Mary Frances Chambers, age 89, of Sandersville, died on Sunday, April 1, 2018 in a local hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 4 in May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville. Reverend Randall Smith will officiate. Pallbearers will be members of the Kegalo Hunting Club including Marc Pinson, Andy Stanton, Steve Turner, Danny Gillespie, Louis Grech, Doc Gallagher and Mike Gaskins.
Mrs. Chambers was a native of Jefferson County, Georgia, the daughter of the late Josie Phillips and the late Susie Purvis Phillips. She had resided in Washington County for many years and was the wife of the late James Hyman Chambers. She was preceded in death by a sister, Plexie Phillips Culbreth. Mrs. Chambers was a homemaker and a former bookkeeper for the Vogue in Sandersville. She was Washington County Homemaker of the Year in 1959, the same year Mr. Chambers was Washington County Farmer of the Year. Mrs. Chambers was a past president of the Deepstep Parent Teachers Association and a past president of the Washington County Parent Teachers Association. Mrs. Chambers and her husband were instrumental in the formation of Brentwood School.
Survivors are her children, James Hyman Chambers, Jr. and his wife Roseanne of Sandersville, Susan Chambers Northington and her husband Robert of Sandersville and Shirley Chambers Ellington and her husband Mark of Sandersville; grandchildren, Jason Northington and Erin Ellington.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday until the hour of service.
